Photo: Page Fence Giants 1895 - Courtesy of Jay SanfordPage Fence Giants is the story of baseball superstar Bud Fowler—who forms an all-black team so he can keep playing the sport he loves—and J. Wallace Page, a white entrepreneur who decides to back the team in order to advertise his new invention: the woven wire fence.

The story takes place in 1890s America after a brief golden period of post-Civil War integration. Page Fence Giants sheds light on a forgotten chapter in American history—a time historians call the “Reckless Decade”—a decade filled with the promise of a better life for all and the reality of an increasingly segregated society.
